American Brilliance

$425.00

An original mixed media painting by Nathalie Kalbach, signed in the lower right.

In the 1890s, The Jersey Journal has often mentioned Bentley Ave in connection with families who owned exquisite cut glass. Oval cabinets of plate glass held an array of cut glass that sparkled like diamonds. The women of Bentley Ave were celebrated not only for their possession of these exquisite treasures but also for their roles as society women, known for their domestic graces and meticulous housekeeping. Sparkling crystal, likely polished by someone else, was the ultimate symbol of these esteemed qualities.

Intriguingly, Bentley Ave is also known as part of Doctor’s Row, an ironic nod to the medical or academic excellence of its residents, adding another layer to the story of American Brilliance.

*American Brilliance – named for its exceptional brilliance due to the high lead content of the glass – 1890-1925

This painting was part of the “Sidewalk Stories” Exhibition at the Museum of Jersey City History.

Acrylic Paint, Markers, Wax Bars and painted Canvas pieces on 12″ x 12″ canvas
Note: This painting comes framed in a simple wooden floater frame
